Hazelnuts will not require special storage, but as long as the room is cold, that’s the only thing that will be needed. The shell will protect them. They can be placed in a refrigerator as well. Keep in mind that the temperature should be 55 F in a room. However, if you wish the hazelnut to keep its quality, then you must store them in a freezer, or the refrigerator.

Hazelnut, also know as Cobnut or Filbert belongs to the Betulaceae family. It is the easiest nut to grow, and the quality of the nuts is high when compared to the other nuts. Hazelnuts are easy to grow since they do not require as much space as the other nut trees.

Hazelnut can grow in almost all types of soils except waterlogged areas. It is preferable to maintain the pH of the ground it grows in, between 5.5 to 7.5. Though hazelnut can survive adverse growing conditions, the roots of the trees must be at least 2.4 to 3 meters deep for optimal growth.

Hazelnut is grown commercially in parts of Australia like Tasmania, Victoria, South Wales, and Western Australia. There is a currently growing interest in its cultivation despite no large-scale plantings.

These nuts were introduced to Australia about 150 years ago. Though they have been a traditional crop in the cold climatic conditions in South Australia, the first large orchard was planted only in 2014 in the warm region of New South Wales. The commercial-scale growers have up to 1,000,000 trees, whereas small producers have less than 100. For many, it is a part-time enterprise rather than a full-time production practice.

Hazels provide a burst of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. These nuts help reduce blood fat levels, maintain optimal blood pressure, improves sugar levels, and reduce overall body inflammation. Despite a high calorific value of 176 in 20 whole kernels of hazels, they come packed with nutrients and healthy fats.

Hazels have a high concentration of proanthocyanidins which protect our bodies against oxidative stress, thereby preventing some types of cancers. They also contain potassium, zinc, vitamin B6, folate, and phosphorus in decent amounts. Hazelnuts, in fact, improve your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels.
